ASMAU’L-HUSNA (BEAUTIFUL DIVINE NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES OF ALLAH J.J) :
Human being has a perfect physical and pyschological structure. He thinks of himself, the evironment he is living in, the past and the future. He certainly thinks of ALLAHU DHU’L-JALAL who is the Owner of this system created, governed and kept in perfect balance and order.
Human asks it’s Master and Owner of the system!…
He investigates the qualities of the Creator creating it. The concepts and words attributed to Dhat-i Ilahiyya are called “Adjective / Attribution(sifat)” or “Name(Asma)”.
Being the most beautiful names of ALLAH, Asma-ul-Husna, are related to ALLAH-U DHU’L JALAL in 4 places in the Qur’an ( Al-A’raf 7/180 ; Al-Isra 17/110; Al-Ta Ha 20/8 and Al-Hashr 59/24 please look it up in the Qur’an).
The Real Name belongs to HIS Noble and Supreme Essence(DHAT) and it is a singular and unique name called “ALLAH” .
The other names; are the attributive, glorifying and exalting names meaning veneration(hurmat) and respect. They were certainly selected from the verses of Qur’an, and it was told to us by Rasulullah SAW that we could pray with them. There are about 300 concepts related to ALLAH in the Qur’an.
In the sacred hadiths, 99 Asmau’l-Husna (Most Beatiful Names of ALLAH) were stated to us. Meaning of these Names are not absolute but they draw us close in accordance with the level of our understanding.
We learned from the prayers of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) that there are so many Names of ALLAH we don’t know :
Allaahumma innee ‘abduka wa ibn ‘abdika wa ibn amatika, naasiyati bi yadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka, as’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghaybi ‘andak an taj’ala al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’a huzni wa dhahaaba hammi :
O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’an the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety “ (Hakim Al-Mustadraq 1/509, Ahmad 1/391)
The Name “ALLAH” appears 2739 times in various verses in the Qur’an, without getting any “the” ( the is ‘Al’ in Arabic e.g. Al-Adl: the Just) and combines (jam in arabic) the meanings of all beautiful names and adjectives getting “the”, and the Gatherer for all of them.
This means when we say “ALLAH (J.J)”, This Name includes the meaning of AL-HAYY, Al-WADUD and all other Divine Names and Adjectives.
Be careful that the names “night” and “day” are given to the same place at different times and states.
This is similar for the Divine Names as well...
The name “ALLAH” is singular and ESSENtiaL (ASL).
This Singular Name reflects all the other Beautiful Names as its’ own adjectives…
From a point of view; it is similar to the case of a person looking at himself on flat, convex and concave mirrors and seeing various appearances, or it is like the same electricity current making each device work in accordance with its’ own function. For instance, while the oven is heating, the fridge will cool…
In Muhammadi Tasawwuf, name has a zahir(outer/manifested) and batin(inner/unmanifested) as well. For instance:
Zahir of the“ Habba”, the kernel of the “Muhabbat” , is the seed, the essential(asl) and the main. Batin of the “habba” includes the Truth of “We are One”. Habba looks like a seed of something from outside but inside it includes genetic cards of the past, present moment and the future.
Therefore, the word is an alive seed(habba) in Muhammadi Tasawwuf, and if it finds the qualified person, it comes in to existence . What we mean by the qualified person is an alive person who is not sleeping, not a sleep walker or drunk but conscious. That sort of person will certainly have a naseeb but he needs to show effort to make it his qismat.
In Muhammadi Tasawwuf, every body has a dominant name(Galib Asma) special to that person like the finger print of his own essence, in the learning and the education of every person. That is his character and natural ability which is essential in the perfection of the servanthood.
In order to reach(SILA) to the essence which we call the fixed point or the plug of Muhammadi Light(Noor), it is necessary to reach the conscious of being Muhammadi and
To discipline the body(Tarbiya-i Beden)
To clean the Nafs (Tazkiyat-i Nafs)
To purify the Heart( Tasfiya -i Qalb)
To polish the Spirit( Tajliya-i Rooh)
at the station of Muhammadi betterment (islah) and salvation(iflah).
Being the Absolute Murshid, Muhammad (alayhissalam) as a mercy to the worlds is the only divine station.
“…Wa `Allama ‘Ādama Al-‘Asmā‘a Kullahā …..: And He taught Adam all the names…..” (Qur’an Al-Bakara 2/31)
We know that every asma was loaded on human being(insan) as a natural disposition(fitrat) and the human uses them at various works.
These names bear opposites.
While the name An-Nafi’u (the Creator of Good) calls the person to do good and serve the people,
The name Ad-Darru (the Creator of the Harmful) may call the person to harm.
The dominant name(Peculiar Asma) in the center of the person is affected by the names orbiting around it.
However, the Peculiar Name reaching to its rushd [*], turns in to pure light(noor) and good(hayr).
[*] Rushd: Rushd is to find the right path and direction(istiqama) , and to get connected to it. Rushd is to walk on the path of Haqq(Truth)firmly, steadily and directly. .
It is like a magnet of Muhabbat, while pulling the truth and good with its one end, it pushes the falsehood and evil with the other end.
The advantage and disadvantage of the Asma Power depends upon the partial will(Irada-I Juzziya) and the personal choice in the test of servanthood(test of life). It is like the fire, either it warms us or burns!…
All asmas in the Universe manifests by using the asma “AZ-Z‘AHIRU: the Manifest One” as a mirror of manifestation…
And all asmas have magnificient , tremendous and blessed(mubarak) features specific to themselves…
My Precious Brothers and Sisters,
The reason we focus on some subjects insistently is that they are the foundations of Qur’anic(Rabbani) and Muhammadi Method which are essential to reach
Muhammadi Word( I’tikad, belief),
Muhammadi Amal( Sunnat-I Saniyya),
Muhammadi Akhlaq (Moral, Manners,Conduct or Ethics) and
Muhammadi State (H‘al)
Asmau’l-Husna is one of those subjects as well.
Marifat is first to know one’s self(Nafs) then to know his RABB and cognize Him.
The way of cognising one’s RABB is not a story, fairy tale, dream or imagination but to follow
the Qur’an that was revealed by mercy and generosity, and
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam)who had implemented and put it in practice.
Asmau’l Husna, are the names whose origin and essence(ASL) is accepted as ALLAHU DHUL JALAL. Their compositions(tarkeeb)/ combinations are evident, certain and accurate(Nass) by Qur’an and Hadiths.
Never forget that MUHAMMADI TASAWWUF is the knowledge(ilm) of Tawheed(Unity). And Tawheed is the essence(ASL) of the Religion of ISLAM basing everything on the Oneness. Tawheed is also ONE, principal, absolute must and “sine quo non” in Tasawwuf. It is an unconditional condition. The Speaker(Mutakallim) is ALLAH TAALA. The Addressee is Rasulullah SAV and “WE/US”.
“WE” are the ones annihilated themselves in the word, acts(amal), moral(akhlaq), manners and states (Hâl)of MUHAMMAD A.S, who is the Honor of the Universe and owner of
One Prostration(Sujud) and
and (we) reached to Muhammadi Announcement(Declaration)…
You, me and him have united and become “WE / US”. WE are ONE and MUHAMMADI!…
As well as the divine names (Asmau’l-Husna)included in Qur’an-i Kareem, there are also divine names mentioned in the hadith-i sharifs [*].
[*] Hadith : In Islamic terminology, the term “hadith” refers to reports about the statements or actions of Prophet Muhammad SAW, or about his tacit approval of something said or done in his presence.
Asmau’l Husna enables us
to feel respect to our Lord(Rabb),
to be satisfied by Him,
to feel peace in our hearts,
and to make a way for our prayers by hoping the blessings, generosity and donations of our Lord.
Asmau’l Husna enables us to have accurate and enough knowledge about ALLAH TAALA. Asmau’l-Husna is introductory and satisfier in faith(iman).
Asmau’l-Husna explains the “Primordial” Creator to human being mentally and by actions.
Asmau’l-Husna lets us know that the Creator can be known in our minds by means of His names and attributes.
Qur’an-I Kareem commands and advises to human insistently to pray and remember ALLAH so that human, who is a creation with his mind and heart, will setup a connection with his Creator.
The words of Asma are not to be recited only by tounges( sounds in mouths) but they should also be turned in to a source of knowledge and wisdom. We learn this from Rasulullah (SAW) using so many divine names(asma) in his prayers.
While human and his mind is being a mirror for the manifestation(Tajalli) of the Divine Names, human is living them personally in the life of this Universe.
We were even notified that every body has a “Dominant Name : Galib Asma” manifesting personally. The adjectives and names are the meanings attributed to the Essence of God (Dhat-i ilahiyya).
They were expressed with a level of similitude which can be comprehended by human mind.
Being beyond the senses, ALLAH (Jalla Jalaluhu) explained the attributes and names of His Exalted Essence in the world of senses by means of the concepts of this world.
AL- BASIYRU ( Jalla Jalaluhu): We will say Al-Basiyru is “The Seer of everything, everywhere, everytime, at everystate absolutely and rightly” and know!…
While His sight(seeing) is indefinably different from ours, we will have to use the term “Basar-Basirat”, which means the seeing of human, because we are limited to the potentials of human mind. There is no other way!…
Any body who has a little mind will figure out that there is no likeness of ALLAH Taala in all respects. ALLAH lets us know about this in the Qur’an:
“…. there is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the One that hears and sees (all things). “ (Qur’an, Al-Shura 42/11)
In the ocean of Asma, there can not even be a single Name made up by the mind and senses of humanbeing. Because ALLAH-U DHU’L JALAL can be known as much as He introduced Himself. Every one of them is like a missile prepared for an infinite journey in the world of Love. Their brand is single and it is Qur’ani(Muhammadi)…
THE NAME and NAMES(ASMA)
While 113 chapters(surahs) in the Qur’an starts with “Basmala (name)”, “Basmala” is also included inside two chapters. The word,
“Ism” is found in 9 places
“Ismullah” in 9 places,
“Ismu Rabbika” in 9 places, and
“Ismihu “ is repeated in 20 places in the Qur’an.
The term, “ Asmau’l Husna”, is found in 4 places in Qur’an-I Kareem. In these verses, ALLAH Teala’s Tawheed(Unity) is stated, and the Names including tanzihi [*], subuti [*] and fiili attributes are remembered…
[*] Tanzihi Attributes of Allah: Essential Real Existence (Wujud), Eternity (Qidam), Everlastingness (Baqa), Non-Resemblence to creation ( Mukhalafatuhu lilhawadith), Non-neediness of others (Qiamuhu binafsih) and Oneness (Wahdaniat).
[*] Subuti Attributes of Allah: Power (Qudrat), Will (Iradat), Knowledge (Ilmu), Life (Hayat), Hearing and Sight (Sama’ and Basar) , Speech (Kalam) and Takwin.
These Tanzihi and Subuti Attributes will be explained in more details.
“ Allah’s are the fairest names. Invoke Him by them. And leave the company of those who blaspheme His names(Asma’ul Husna). They will be requited what they do.” (Al-A’raf 7/180)
” Allah! there is no god but He! To him belong The Most Beautiful names(Asma’ul Husna).” (Al-Tâ Hâ 20/8)
” He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Forms (or Colours). To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names(Asma’ul Husna); whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises and Glory: and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” (Al-Hashr 59/24)
” Say: call upon Allah, or call upon Rahman: by whatever name ye call upon him, (it is well): for to him belong the most beautiful names. Neither speak thy prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between.….” (Isra 17/110)
We do not seek meaning for the Lafdhullah, “ALLAH”. We understand the other names, and we live, love and respect them by participating and putting them in action in our prayers, in seeking asylum and in supplications during our lives. What is important is the Ridha(Contentment) of ALLAH!…
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There are ninety-nine names of Allah; he who commits them to memory would get into Paradise. Verily, Allah is Odd (He is one, and it is an odd number) and He loves odd number. And in the narration of Ibn ‘Umar (the words are):” He who enumerated them.” (Muslim, book #035, Hadith #6475, Bukhari, Da’awat 68, Tirmizi, Da’awat 87-3502)
With this hadith-i sharif, in the lists of Names narrated by Abu Huraira(r.a), Tirmizi and Ibn Maja :
Tirmizi’s list starts with the Name “ALLAH(J.J)” and finishes with “AS-SABUR(the Patient ONE)”. 99 names are listed.
In the list of Ibn Maja includes some different names and finishes with “AL-AHADU(the ONE)”. 100 names are listed in the list stated by Ibn Maja.
Both of these lists together include 125 Names. There are 15 more names in the Qur’an which are not in these two lists. Together they make 140 Names.
There are some other names stated to us, which are in prayers(dua) inside the authentic hadiths…
However, what is important is not the number but the veneration to ALLAH…
Who, is remembering(doing zikr) WHOSE name?
Does the ear of the person hear what his mouth says?
If his ear is hearing, Does his heart confirms to this hearing and adjusts it’s self to it?
Is the Servant reciting the Name,“Al-HALEEMU(the Forbearing)” really forbearing and gentle in his own life of ex-amin-ation? Or is He seven headed dragon?…
The plenitude of Asmau’l-Husna enables us to progress rapidly and easily in finding perfection(kamalat) in various ways…
We do not want philosophy and argument(Jadal).
Because, Muhammadi pleasure and togetherness make us “WE”.
We make zikr with the Names by understanding them, and strive for living by the influence of those concerning us.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said,
“There are 99 Names that are Allah’s alone, one-hundred less one. Whoever (learns, understands, and) enumerates Them, enters Paradise. Allah is ‘Witr’, i.e, Odd in number, and loves Witr.” (Related by Imaam Bukhari, Vol. 8, Kitab ‘Da’wat’; also related by Imaam Muslim in Kitab ‘Dhikr wa Du’aat’; See Lu’lu wal Marjan, Hadith #1714)

140 Divine Names of ALLAH , “Asmau’l Husna” listed above were gathered by using three major sources including Ibni Maja (Hadith), Tirmizi(Hadith) and Ibni Hajar(Qur’an). The Names mentioned in the Qur’an were given with a Reference from Qur’an in a bracket e.g. ALLAH [Qur’an Ref: 1/1]. There are more detailed explanations of these names but we only give a summary of these Names for the moment. We may give more details and descriptions of some Names in the near future inshaallah.
We would hope that this brief list could help the people to understand the divine attributes of ALLAH to a certain level. Absolute understanding of the Names or comprehending ALLAH is impossible as human being is created with a capacity of mind, and has to use his mind to understand/comprehend. ALLAH can not be comprehended or sieged by human mind. The mind is a creation of ALLAH and ALLAH sieges all minds.
A waliullah Dr.Munir Derman(rh.a) was saying in some of his writings,
“If Allah could be known by intelligence, there would be no necessity for prophets to come”.
“Do not attempt to prove Allah by using His creation!
Who are you trying to prove Who by saying He exists or not.
Exists! Exists! Exists!
Try to see the power of Allah on His creations.
Trying to prove the existence of Allah is exactly the doubting. It is Kufr.
Asking the mind, which mind can not comprehend, is an insult to the mind.”
Another blessed muslim saint Rumi (K.S) said “you can not arrive in Allah by reaching to the levels of maturity in mind and intellect. Beneficience and bounty of the King(Sultan) does not accept any body but those who accept their inability.”
His people disputed with him. He said: (come) ye to dispute with me, about Allah, when he (Himself) hath guided me? I fear not (the beings) ye associate with Allah: unless my Lord willeth, (nothing can happen). My Lord comprehendeth in his knowledge all things. Will ye not (yourselves) be admonished?
لاَّ تُدْرِكُهُ الأَبْصَارُ وَهُوَ يُدْرِكُ الأَبْصَارَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ
No vision can grasp him, but his grasp is over all vision: he is above all comprehension, yet is acquainted with all things.
Al-Talaq [65/12] :
Allah is He Who created seven Firmaments and of the earth a similar number. Through the midst of them (all) descends His Command: that ye may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah comprehends all things in (His) Knowledge.
“God can be found only in God’s qualities. God’s beauty can be found only in
God’s beauty, God can be found only in His wisdom, God can be found in His
grace, His tolerance, His patience, His equality. This means that you will
only understand Him when you gaze intently into His qualities. If you do
not have that point, you cannot detect Him with atoms or currents or
instruments, with science or magnets, He cannot be known with any of this.
He can be understood through His qualities, He can be known through His
qualities, that is the mystery. “ Triple Flame, Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (rh.a)
