I WORE THE CLOAK (KHIRQA) OF MALAMAT
WHAT IS IT TO THEM?

I wore the cloak (khirqa) of Malamat
I wore it my self on my back
I smashed the bottle of “shame and honour” on the stone
What is it to them?

Sometimes I ascend to the heaven
And I watch (sayr[*]) the Universe (alam)
Sometimes I descend on the earth
And the Universe (alam) watches me

[*]Sayr (a): An Arabic term meaining going, moving around, walking, making motion. In Tasawwuf, making sayr means to watch the dawran and to ascertain the origin and the fact of material(ashya). Term “SayrAN” is to watch the “AN:Moment, Now, the seed of time”.

Sometimes I go to the school (Madrasa)
And I study knowledge for the sake of Haqq(Truth)
Sometimes I go to the Tavern (Maikhane)
And I drink “dam [*]”, what is it to them?

[*] Dam (dem): Dem means many things in literature, it means Wine, blood, time etc.

Sofus have called
“Haram:Impermissible”, this love of wine
I fill and I drink
What is it to them? The sin is mine.

[*] Sofu in literature means ascetics or those who totally obey the commands and prohibitions in the religion of Islam. However, in public term”ham sofu” is also used for the extremists and fanatics who have not reached the maturity (kamalat) and remained in the surface of the religion (zahir) only. They are not like Batini Scholars or “Ulul Albab” who know the inner meanings of the verses in the Qur’an and live them. In my understanding , the real mature Sofus are not meant here. However the writer of this poem, Nesimi could have used a better term here in this poem than “Sofus” to prevent misunderstandings. [garibAN]

I’ve lost and I seek
Beloved is mine, what is it to them?
Some times, I go to my essence vineyard
And I gather roses, what is it to them?

Sofus make prostration
To the “mihrab”[*] of the mosque
My prostration place is
The threshold of the friend, what is it to them?

[*]Mihrab: (in Persian or محراب, in Arabic ألمحراب pl. محاريب), sometimes spelled "mehrab" or "mehraab", is a niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the qibla, i.e. the direction of Kaaba that Muslims should face when praying. The wall is called the qibla wall. The mihrab gives the impression of a door or a passage to Mecca. They vary in size but are usually ornately decorated. Mihrabs first appeared in the reign of the Umayyad khalif al-Walid I (705–715).

[*] Please see the previous explanation for Sofus mentioned above.

They asked Nesimi,
“Are you happy with your Beloved?”
Whether I am happy or not
That Beloved is mine, what is it to them? [*]

[*] Alternative translation : Some commentators comment on this line as
That Beloved is me, what is to them? That “Me” here can be thought as the “Me within me ” or in Yunus Emre (k.s)’s terms “ There is an I within the I” !.[garibAN]
