DON'T BE LIKE A CRANE IN MEDITATION, BE LIKE A LOTUS FLOWER

My Son, do not wander here and there to meditate and search for God. Look at a crane as it stands patiently for six or eight hours at a time, waiting to catch a fish. See how subtly it stands motionless on one leg, folding its wings, so that even its shadow is controlled. It does this because it is hungry.

Similarly, if you have a selfish desire or a selfish motive for your meditation, whether you meditate in the forest or in the desert, your state is no different from that of a crane. Does the crane attain wisdom, heaven, or
gnanam [*] by standing motionless on one leg every day of its life? One day it will die. In the same way, man also succumbs when trouble or danger comes.

My son! Reflect on this and take on God’s qualities. God and God’s kingdom exist within those qualities. You must be like the lotus leaf that does not retain water on its surface even though it dwells in water. You must live in the midst of the hunger, illusion, and joys and sorrows of the world without holding them within you. If you can stand alone like the lotus leaf, worshipping and merging in a detached state with the One who has no attachment, you will attain an exalted state in your life.

If you understand this and act accordingly, the kingdom in which you live will be God’s kingdom, He will dwell where you dwell, the words you speak will be His words, and your breath will be His breath. You must understand this.

[*] Gnanam(Tamil ): Divine luminous wisdom. If man can throw away all the worldly treasures and take within him only the treasure called ALLAH and His qualities and actions(Asmau’l Husna), His conduct and behavior, if he makes ALLAH the only treasure and complete-ness for him- that is the state of gnanam.

Short Commentary by GaribAN:

Lotus leaf sometimes holds the drops of water on its surface for a while but the beauty of the flower is to be clean in the middle of a muddy water. This is one of its main feature not to hold any dirt or mud on its leaves therefore used as a symboll of Taqwa (Being strong against the desires and tests of the world and illusion and guarding against evil qualities) e.g.

Qur’an Al-Mudassir [74/4] : “And thy garments keep free from stain!”

Qur'an Al-Muhammad [47/17] : "While as for those who walk aright, He addeth to their guidance, and giveth them their protection (against evil).",

Qur'an Al-Yunus [10/63]: " Those who believe and (constantly) guard against evil (term used here in Arabic is yattaqun, which brings ittika or being qawi, 'strong' with taqwa);"

Qur'an Al-Maidah [5/93]: "On those who believe and do deeds of righteousness there is no blame for what they ate (in the past), when they guard themselves from evil, and believe, and do deeds of righteousness, (or) again, guard themselves from evil and believe, (or) again, guard themselves from evil and do good. For Allah loveth those who do good." ,

Qur'an Al-Zumar [39/10] : "Say: O ye My servants who believe fear your Lord. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world. Spacious is Allah's earth those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure.".

Now being clean and pure is to be "mutahharrun" like Marium(Mary) Peace Be Upon Her mentioned in the Qur’an. Taqwa (to guard against the dirt), Repentence(to remove the dirt or dusts), Patience( Sabr is to the mud in which lotus grows. It is like the dunya or the body made of clay or the obstacles of this world. ), Thanks (Shukur of the Lotus flower to God is its fragrance and its welcoming to the honeybees) and Contentment(Being happy with ones state and not complaining to Allah) brings purity to the believer as mentioned in the following verses:

Qur'an At-Tawba [9/108]: “Never stand thou forth therein. There is a mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety; it is more worthy of thy standing forth (for prayer) therein. In it are men who love to be purified; and Allah loveth those who make themselves pure.”

Qur'an Al-Fatir [35/18] : ” Thou canst but admonish such as fear Their Lord unseen and establish regular Prayer. And whoever purifies himself does so for the benefit of his own soul; and the destination (of all) is to Allah.”

Qur’an Al-Sad [38/46]. “Lo! We purified them with a pure thought, remembrance of the Home (of the Hereafter).”

Those who are pure will be able to touch Qur’an only:

Qur’an Al-Vakia [56/79]: “Which none shall touch but those who are clean:”

Those who purify their souls will succeed:

Qur’an Ash-Shams [91/9] : “Truly he succeeds that purifies it,”
