Loving valiant ones we are

From Mind and Rushd [1] we are far

In ecstasy, with the drink of love we are

There is never dizziness for us

Alive we are, we don’t die

In the darkness, we don’t lie

We neither become earth nor mortify

There is no night and day for us

Moon and sun in our province(homeland)

Always reside with persistence

Reaching to it, dubiousness at times

Fullmoon never cresent becomes

The roses in our rosegarden
Stay fresh, they don’t fade
Being Autumn they don’t fall
There is neither winter nor spring for us

We drank the vine[2] of Love
We migrated to the land of relinquishment
We caught flame and burned up with Your Love
There is no “
tahrik ü târ [3]” for us

Since reaching to the light(noor) of Sun

A drop from an atom(zarra) my body is

What a drop, it is a spring

Bottomless and shoreless it is

Leave Oh Hamid the real existence [4]

If you wish to see the beloved

When you see that manifestation(tajalli)

There is no superior enlightenment [5] than this

[1] Rushd: Rushd is to find the right path and direction(istiqama) , and to get connected to it. Rushd is to walk on the path of Haqq(Truth)firmly, steadily and directly.

[2] The vine : The vine mentioned here is “the Divine Love”.
[3] Târ: Somuncu Baba is using an abbreviation here and  Târ ü Mar: Confused, Messy, Perturbed. Somuncu Baba is in a away stating that we are not effected by the others and get perturbed by them. No one can cause us to be perturbed as we are the friends of Truth (Haqq).

[4] Real Existence: This existence is the existence of the TRUTH(Haqq). His existence is real and any other existence is temporary. Somuncu Baba here is stating that one should leave owning the real existence of the Truth by showing to the public his own existence. Leave saying “I”, “me”,”mine” to the public because there is only ONE “I” and that belongs to ALLAH only.

[5] Englightenment: Somuncu Baba uses the term “Kamalat” here instead of englightenment.

His real name is Hamid Hamiduddeen. He is also known as Somuncu Baba. In Turkish , “somuncu” means the baker who makes bread and sell it. He lived in the period of Sayyid Yildirim Bayazid Han around Kayseri, Bursa and Aksaray Provinces of Ottoman Empire(Today’s Turkey). He was born in Akçakaya villiage of Kayseri in AD1331.

He is the son of Shamsaddeen Musa Kaysari who was one of the Khorosan Mystics missioned to conquer Anatolia spiritually. His generation linked to Our Beloved Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). He is his grandson from 24th generation.

Shaikh Hamid-I Wali(K.S) had his first education from his father Shamsaddeen Musa Kaysari. Shaikh Hamid-I Wali(Kaddesallahu sirrehu), having a wise personality, continued his studies to gain knowledge and wisdom in Sham, Tabriz and Ardabil. He had spiritual discipline (manavi tarbiyya) from Alaaddin Ardabili(K.S) and the Spirit (ruhaniyya) of Bayazid-I Bestami (K.S). Having received his diploma(ijazat) in Religion and Applied Sciences, he was commissioned to enlighten the people and returned to Anatolia then settled in Bursa for this duty.

Hamiduddeen got a bakery built in Bursa. He used to bring wood from the mountain for his bakery and bake the bread with the wood fire. He used to take the bread pannier on his back and go on the streets by saying : ” Bread(somun)! Oh Believers , breaaaad!” and earn his life like this. The public used to call him “Somuncu Baba( father the baker) or Ekmekci Koca(the old baker)” and they used to love the taste of his breads. When Somuncu Baba started to sell the bread, everyone used to run after him to get the bread as they would be consumed quickly by the crowd.

His bakery was in Molla Fanari Street, around Ali Pasha and there were two eyes(holes to put the bread in to baking area) in his baking place. He had a room for worship(ibadat) just beside the bakery. He also had an ordeal cell(cilehane) facing kiblah(towards the house of Allah in Mecca) in order to discipline his soul(nafs). Hamiduddeen (K.S) did not inform anybody about his spiritual state or advertise his knowledge in Bursa. He always strived to be with Haqq(The Truth) while he was living in public.

Ulu Cami Bursa

Inside Look of Ulu Camii(The Great Mosque in Bursa)

Sultan Yildirim Bayazid Han, had started to get Ulu Jamii(Great Mosque) built in Bursa after the victory of Niğbolu. Somuncu Baba supplied the bread requirement of the workers during the building of the Mosque. After the building of Mosque finished, on a Friday, it was announced that the mosque will open. On that day, at the outset Sultan Yildirim Bayazid Han, his soninlow great scholar and wali(mystic) Sayyid Amir Sultan, Hadrat Molla Fanari ,many scholars and public filled Ulu Jamii. When Yildirim Bayazid Han gave the duty of giving sermon(Friday hutba) to Sayyid Amir Sultan, Amir Sultan:

“Oh My Sultan! It would not be appropriate for us to give sermon here while the great scholar of the time is here. The one deserving of giving this sermon for the opening of this mosque is that man over there,” said by showing Somuncu Baba.

As Somuncu Baba knew the hadith saying “ the fame is a disaster”, he avoided to give sermon but he walked towards the pulpit with the order of Sultan. When He came near Amir Sultan:

“Oh My Amir, why did you reveal me by doing that?” said he.

Amir Sultan said: ”I did this ,because I could not see anyone ahead of you(in knowledge) here.”

Jamaat( people in the mosque) were listening these conversations by amazement and waiting curiously to hear the sermon of Somuncu Baba. When Somuncu Baba gave the sermon, the sermon was so full of knowledge that nobody from Bursa had heard such a sermon till that time. They understood that he was blessed waliullah. During his sermon, Somuncu Baba :

“There are some sections that some scholars can not understand within the commentaries(Tafseers) of Surah Al-Fatiha( 1st chapter of Qur’an meaning the Opener), lets make a commentary of this chapter ”

He made the commentary of Chapter al-Fatiha over 20 different ilms(knowledge) in seven different ways. He said various wise words. Many got amazement. Mainly Hadrat Malla Fanari:

“ Somuncu Baba, firstly tackled our problems in the commentaries of Surah Al –Fatiha by showing karamat. These seven different  commentaries are fair witnesses to his knowledge. First commentary of Fatiha was understood by all people in the mosque. 2nd commentary was understood by a portion of people, 3rd commentary was understood by very less amount of people. 4th and the others after could not be comprehended by any of us”

After the Friday Prayer, all jamaat wanted to kiss his hand and take his prayers(duas). He did not upset the wish of the jamaat and stood by the door. Anyone coming out of the three doors of Ulu Jamii(the Great Mosque) was saying “ I was honoured to kiss the hand of Somuncu Baba!”. He had showed karamat again by being at the three doors at the same time for the jamaat.

After the prayer, Hamid-I Wali(Somuncu Baba) went home and Molla Fanari came to visit him saying:

“Oh my master! I have been trying to make the commentary of Surah Al-Fatiha recently but there were places that I could not understood. With this sermon, you shed light on the places I could not understand. We have 5000 akcha(currency used at that time) money collected during our service in the Madrasa(Muslim Theological School). It is halal (lawfull) doubtlessly. If you accepted, I would like to give this to you as a gift.”

Somuncu Baba did not accept it. When Molla Fanari said:

“I would like to be honoured by being your student ”, Somuncu Baba favoured him and prayed for him. All scholars liked the commentary of Molla Fanari by the help of Somuncu Baba and they said it has been considered as estimable tafseer for centuries.

When his identity was revealed, Somuncu Baba said:

“Our secret(SIRR) was revealed and anybody knows us!”. He wanted to go from Bursa. Oneday early in the morning, He took a few students with him from the Madrasa of Gavas Pasha and started to his journey. Molla Fanari hearing that Somuncu Baba is leaving the city of Bursa, he run after him and caught him under a plane tree. He pleaded with him to stay in Bursa and made many requests. But Somuncu Baba insisted to leave. Then, he asked prayer from him for the people of Bursa. Somuncu Baba by turning his face towards Bursa, he prayed for this city to be abundant, fruitfull and stay as green, after that he left the city by farewell. This area where he made his prayer was called “Duâ çınarı: prayer plane tree  since that day.

As his spiritual identity was revealed, Shaikh Hamid-I Wali(K.S) came to Aksaray with his students , because he was afraid of the fame.  He lived in Aksaray and passed away in Aksaray in AD1412(hijri .815). His rose garden tomb is located and open for visit to public in the cemetery ,”Ervah Mezarligi” of Aksaray Province in Turkey. He had two sons, Yusuf Haqiqi and Halil Taybi. The Tomb of Yusuf Haqiqi Baba is in Zafer Province of Aksaray. It is open for visit today. His other son, Halil Taybi is passed away in Daranda after the return of Hajj. His tomb is in Daranda.

His noble generation is called “Behcetler” in Aksaray and still live there today. I am one of those who reached the honour of living with and being friend to Kalayci Yahya Guzel Baba who is from the grandsons of Somuncu Baba in Aksaray... I have shared some of my memories with him in Muhammadi Tasavvuf pages (Muhammadi Tasawwuf is a system based on the teachings of Rasulullah SAW. This technical tasawwuf system has been structured by Latif Yildiz Ekrem Aksarayi known as kulihvani and it is in Turkish, not translated to English yet. Some of his works will appear in time in www.muhammedinur.com/En . His Turkish books and about 6000 poems can be read freely in www.muhammedinur.com )

Outside look from the Tomb of Somuncu Baba in Aksaray:

Tomb of Somuncu Baba is in the city centre of Aksaray, towards the northeast side , at the skirt of the hill of Kilicarslan the II. It is inside the cemetery of Arvah(Ervah Kabristanlığı). Tomb of Shaikh Hamid-I Wali is an open tomb. His grave is found there. His grave is made of marble with “Hijri.815 and AD.1412” engraved on it. As well as this, the graves of his grandsons and his closed friends are also located here. There is a seclusion(itikaf)room under the ground. The steps are leading down to a small door (70 x 40 cm in size) then this door is leading to this seclusion room. You need to kneel down to get through this door to be able to get in to this room which is abiut 1.5m x 1.5m in size with 70cm height. When we were children, the corridor leading to the seclusion room was very long like a tunnel…

Shaikh Hamid-i Wali(Kaddesallahu sırrehu: May Allah bless his secret) educated Haji Bayrami Wali(k.s) in both applied science and knowledge of akhirat(afterlife) here in  Aksaray and commissioned him to teach this islamic knowledge to the people in Ankara(capital city of Turkey today).

Somuncu Baba and his most famous student Haji Bayrami Wali had influence on Ottoman Empire aswell.  They have effected the Ottoman Culture by teaching Islamic Knowledge to today’s well known saints. Some of those important saints and the cities where their graves are listed below :

Halil Taybi – Darende

Somuncu Baba’s extensions and reflections are so perfect that t it is possible to find a part of him and feel them in the heart , in every corner of Anatolia. Having influence over many Islamic Scholars, He is one of the cornerstones of our culture today.

Inside look of the Mosque of Somuncu Baba Tomb: Aksaray

Somuncu Baba, despite apparent and deep Islamic knowledge, has given very little work or very less works of him has reached us today. This might be due to his Malami background which we had mentioned earlier. Malamis avoided the fame. Indeed, despite being a teacher in an Islamic School, one of his successors(Caliphs), Haji Bayrami Wali had not written much books as well. Even, when Muhammediyya Yazıcıoğlu, who is a student and caliph of Haji Bayrami Wali, had presented his work to his teacher.

Haji Bayrami Wali ”Oh Mahmad, if you had helped to disciplin a heart instead of writing this, would it not be better for you?”expressed his own thoughts also. Inspite the fact that there is less work reaching to us from Somuncu Baba, those works of him are available in our hands today:

Commentary of 40 hadiths (Hadith –I Arbain),

Zikr Risalesi,

Silâhul Mürîdîn and Vechi-l Esrar.

Recommend to my friends and those who do go on our way:

Let them

fear Allah, Hidden or obvious wherever they are,
eat less, talk less, sleep less,
mix with public less,

stay away from all evil and disobedience,

always avoid lust,

cut their hands off what are in the hands of the people,

empty themselves from all evil attributes,

adorn themselves with beautiful and praised qualities and

refrain from listening poetry and songs if they are leading them to sin,

not to separate themselves from the congregation(jamaat) by having different opinion ,

not to eat any suspicious morsel, even if they die from the hunger.

Many thanks to all who collaborated in posting this. There is not so much about Somuncu Baba’s life in English and this is an invaluable addition to the little knowledge we have avaliable to us. Thank you again.
