PREVEZE SEA WAR (1538)

Charles Quint(Charles V)who wished to get back the dominance over the Mediterranean Sea from the Turks, had prepared a very big navy. Andrea Doria was at charge as the commander of the Crusaders Fleet which was constituted of the ships from all European governments.

There were 600 ships, about 3000 cannons and 60000 marines in the Crusaders Fleet. Ottoman Navy was constituted of 122 ships. It was at the command of Kaptan-i Derya (Fleet Admiral) Barbaros Hayraddin Pasha. Barbaros, as the customary, was in the middle, and his son Hasan Reis was near him. On the right wing Salih Reis, On the left wing Shaydi Ali Reis, and in the auxiliary Turgut Reis were commanding the fleet. All of them were the worldwide admirals. Although Turkish battle ships were smaller than the crusader ships, they were superior than crusader ships in terms of maneuverability and the firing ability. Administration of the navy was definitely superior than Crusaders. The wind was blowing straight towards the enemy ships and they were velivolant.By writing one of the verses related to winds in the Qur’an-i Kareem , Chapter Al-Sad 36 :

فَسَخَّرْنَا لَهُ الرّٖيحَ تَجْرٖى بِاَمْرِهٖ رُخَاءً حَيْثُ اَصَابَ

Fasakhkharnā Lahu Ar-Rīĥa Tajrī Bi’amrihi Rukhā‘an Ĥaythu ‘Aşāba

Then We made the wind subservient to him; it made hiscommand to run gently wherever he desired”

Barbaros Hayraddin Pasha had it hung on the pole of his trireme. Allah changed the direction of the wind instantly. All of a sudden, the crumpled up sails have pumped up with wind. And the blown up sails of the enemy have shriveled up . Their enemy was obliterated in three hours.
